Planning to study in the UK from Nigeria? Start by organising the evidence behind your course choice and funding. An admission offer is an important step, but it does not mean a student visa has been granted. This guide helps you prepare questions and documents before you apply.
1. Check your offer and CAS separately
UK government guidance requires a current passport or other valid travel documentation and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, known as a CAS, from your course provider. Check the personal details and course information with the institution. If something is wrong, request a correction before relying on the document.
Keep the university correspondence in one folder. Write down the course start date, any conditions still outstanding and the contact details of the admissions team. Ask the university directly about its current requirements rather than relying on a screenshot shared in a group.
2. Research proof of funds before choosing your timing
The current GOV.UK financial guidance lists living costs of £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 outside London, for up to nine months, alongside applicable course fees. For personal funds, it describes a 28-day holding period and evidence dated no more than 31 days before the application. Exceptions and other funding routes have separate conditions; read the complete guidance.
Do not copy an old naira estimate. Build your own planning budget and allow for currency movement, travel and other expenses. Use genuine records issued by your bank and ask about any unclear details. Never edit a balance or use a document you cannot verify.
3. Build a personal checklist
Additional documents can depend on your circumstances, including TB testing, ATAS, sponsorship or parental consent. The official checklist and university guidance should determine your file. Check names and dates across your passport, academic records and funding documents.
4. Prepare useful questions
Before a consultation, list anything you cannot explain: an outstanding offer condition, a funding shortfall, a document discrepancy or a deadline. A clear question is more useful than a request for a guaranteed approval.
